There is a new face to the leadership of the Board of Directors at Tree Canada, Canada's largest national tree organization.

During its 19th Annual General Meeting in West Kelowna on October 24, Board members elected Timo Makinen as its new Chair, Andrew (Andy) Kenney as its Vice Chair and Leo Duguay and Oakville Mayor Rob Burton as new Board members. After three years as Tree Canada's Chair, Dorothy Dobbie has stepped down, after overseeing the expansion of Tree Canada's key programs such as Green Streets Canada, Greening Canada's School Grounds, and Healing Trees. She was presented with a plaque and a handcrafted black walnut bowl, created by wood turning artist Malcolm Zander. Dorothy will now serve as the Past Chair.

"Thanks to Dorothy, Tree Canada moved forward quickly in the last three years to consolidate our image as a customer-responsive and professional organization," said Michael Rosen, Tree Canada President. "We are confident that the new team with Timo and Andy at the helm will continue this trend of seeing Tree Canada grow in its role as Canada's pre-eminent tree NGO."

Timo Makinen has been on Tree Canada's Board since 2006. A chemical engineer by training, he is the Sustainable Development Manager for Shell's international sulphur and bitumen businesses and an expert in carbon markets and regulation. Timo is based in Vancouver. Andy Kenney, a Ph.D. and a long time Senior Lecturer at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Forestry has helped shape urban forestry policy in Canada. He has been on Tree Canada's Board since 2003. Leo Duguay is a former principal and Member of Parliament, currently with the Rothwell Group, a government relations firm. Leo lives in Ottawa. Before entering politics, Mayor Rob Burton enjoyed a successful career as a television producer and journalist, and earned his Master of Science degree in Journalism from Columbia University. Mayor Burton has been an outstanding environmental advocate. His stewardship on green initiatives and urban forestry issues has established Oakville as a leader in this regard.

Tree Canada's Board of Directors and staff are looking forward to working together to make 2012 our biggest year yet as Tree Canada prepares to celebrate its 20th anniversary of working with Canadians to make our country an even greener place to live.

Tree Canada's 20th anniversary will be commemorated at the 10th Canadian Urban Forestry Conference in London, Ontario in October 2012.
