Government of Canada Enters into New Social Security Agreement with the Republic of Macedonia
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/01/11 -- The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, announced that effective immediately, Canadians who have lived and worked in the Republic of Macedonia and Macedonians who have lived and worked in Canada will be eligible to apply for public pension benefits from either or both countries.
This is the culmination of a Social Security Agreement recently negotiated between Canada and the Republic of Macedonia.
"This Agreement demonstrates the spirit of partnership and collaboration between our two countries," said Minister Finley. "It recognizes the valuable contribution Canadians and Macedonians have made to society during their working life."
Canada has negotiated 54 international Social Security Agreements, with 53 in effect, including agreements with Romania and the Republic of Macedonia that come into force today.
This Social Security Agreement between Canada and the Republic of Macedonia will help people who have lived or worked both in Canada and in the Republic of Macedonia to qualify for old age, retirement, disability, or survivor benefits from both countries. The Agreement applies to Canada's Old Age Security Program and Canada Pension Plan (CPP), as well as to the comparable pension program in the Republic of Macedonia.
The Agreement will also result in savings for Canadian companies operating in the Republic of Macedonia. Canadian companies will continue to make CPP contributions for employees they send to work in the Republic of Macedonia, and will be exempt from making Macedonian social security contributions. This translates directly into enhanced competitiveness for Canadian companies operating in the Republic of Macedonia. The same is true for Macedonian companies operating in Canada.

Canada has signed 54 international social security agreements. Agreements are in effect with the following 53 countries:
(i) Limited Agreement that deals only with coverage.
An Agreement has also been signed with the Federative Republic of Brazil, but is not yet in effect.
