Shackleton's Abandoned, Rediscovered and Recreated Whisky

(firmenpresse) - NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 11/01/11 -- The producers of a Scotch whisky that was found in British explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic hut after more than a century, are celebrating that discovery by becoming a corporate sponsor of The Explorers Club, the worldwide center for exploration that bestowed upon Shackleton honorary membership.

Explorers Club President Lorie Karnath said, "The Explorers Club welcomes a new sponsor that represents a brand whose present existence is due to exploration and discovery. Predecessors to the modern-day Mackinlay's Rare Old Highland Malt brand accompanied many an early expedition, at times as a staple or a welcome campfire accompaniment at day's end. Its essence refers to one of the club's most celebrated honorary members, Sir Ernest Shackleton."

Karnath continues, "To become a sponsor of The Explorers Club is an honor involving a process at least as arduous as our policy for vetting prospective members. Mackinlay's will be generously supporting our work at a number of levels and in many ways."

Mackinlay's joins other Explorers Club sponsors including Rolex Watch, U.S.A. and Eddie Bauer®.

Added Dawn Lambert, Marketing Director for Mackinlay's, "What impressed us most about The Explorers Club, besides its obvious connection to Sir Ernest, is their appreciation of discovery, historical heritage, and the ability to consider the future needs of the planet through exploration -- today and tomorrow."

In 2010 a crate of the formerly "extinct" Mackinlay and Co. whisky was recovered from beneath the floor of a hut built by British explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton during his 1907-1909 Antarctic Nimrod Expedition.

Whyte & Mackay, the Scottish distillery that now owns the Mackinlay's brand, launched the bid to recover the whisky for samples to carefully analyze and use to relaunch the defunct Scotch. As the original recipe for the blend no longer exists, famed Whyte & Mackay Master Blender Richard "The Nose" Paterson was enlisted to replicate the historic old brand. Paterson has since successfully reopened this window of history by carefully and meticulously reconstructing the whisky's formula.
