Government of Canada celebrates Skilled Trades and Technology Week
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/01/11 -- Youth across Canada will have the opportunity to discover rewarding career opportunities in trades and technology and participate in a variety of 'hands-on' activities during Skilled Trades and Technology Week.
The launch of Skilled Trades and Technology Week, held at the Canada Science and Technology Museum, provided Ottawa high-school students from Ottawa the occasion to try their hands at various trades and compete against each other to build the best wind turbine.
"We are committed to having the most educated and skilled workforce in the world, so it is more important than ever that youth gain the skills and experience needed to prepare for and succeed in the jobs of tomorrow," said the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development. "Through grants, tax credits and support for training programs, our government is encouraging apprenticeships and careers in the skilled trades and technology sectors."
Skilled Trades and Technology Week was created by Skills/Competences Canada (S/CC) to raise awareness of skilled trades and technology careers among youth, their parents and the general public.
"Industries that depend on quality skilled trade workers are key drivers of our economy," said Shaun Thorson, Chief Executive Officer, S/CC. "At the regional, provincial, territorial and national levels, Skilled Trades and Technology Week helps showcase the broad range of opportunities and benefits of pursuing professions in skilled trades and technology."
The federal government is working with the provinces and territories, community organizations and other stakeholders to provide Canadians with the training, skills and opportunities they need to participate in the workforce and contribute to their communities.

BACKGROUNDER
Skills/Competences Canada (S/CC) is a national, not-for-profit organization that receives funding through the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy. S/CC works with employers, educators, labour groups and governments to promote skilled trades and technology careers among Canadian youth.
The Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy aims to help young people, particularly those facing barriers to employment, get the information, skills and work experience they need to make a successful transition to the workplace. The Strategy includes three components: Career Focus, Skills Link, and Summer Work Experience.
The Youth Employment Strategy is part of the Government of Canada's overall strategy to create the best educated, most skilled and most flexible workforce in the world. The Government underscored its commitment to this strategy in Canada's Economic Action Plan.
