"Everyone STILL Needs a Place to Call Home"

With over 1600 people still homeless in Vancouver, of which 428 are aboriginal, is the city on track to provide adequate housing and support services? How will leading mayoral candidates deal with today's challenges? What are their strategies and solutions?

These questions will be at the heart of an upcoming, free public debate between Gregor Robertson and Suzanne Anton to be held at St. Andrew's-Wesley United Church (Burrard and Nelson, Vancouver) on Monday, November 7, 2011. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; the debate begins at 7 p.m.

"Homelessness has been a significant concern in every Vancouver election in the last decade-including this one," said NPA Mayoral Candidate Suzanne Anton. "I am looking forward to this debate and hearing what everyone has to say about homelessness."

Originally held in 2008, this popular pre-election debate will focus on homelessness and affordable housing. It is designed to show where each candidate stands, how they differ, and if elected, how they propose to deal with these critical issues.

"Homelessness and affordable housing are important issues in Vancouver, and this debate is a great forum for some of our toughest challenges - and the solutions they need - to be discussed," said Vision Vancouver Mayoral Candidate Gregor Robertson. "The 2008 St. Andrew's-Wesley United Church debate was a thoughtful forum for homelessness issues, and I look forward to this year's debate."

The moderator is Stephen Quinn, CBC radio host and Globe and Mail columnist. The panel posing the questions to the candidates includes: Frances Bula, journalist specializing in civic and political affairs; Mike Howell, political reporter for the Vancouver Courier; and Patrick Stewart, Chair of the Aboriginal Homelessness Steering Committee for Metro Vancouver. Audience members may also provide written questions for the moderator or the panel to consider.

This debate is being sponsored by 24 Hours, Vancouver Courier, Westender, CKNW and Citytv. The Debate is hosted by End Homelessness Now. ()
