Canada Announces Successful Conclusion to Libya Mission
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 10/28/11 -- As directed by the Government of Canada, Operation MOBILE (Canada's military response to the crisis in Libya) will commence mission closure activities. This announcement comes as the North Atlantic Council agreed today to end Operation UNIFIED PROTECTOR, the NATO-led effort to impose on Libya the arms embargo and no-fly zone authorized by United Nations Security Council Resolution 1973. This follows the UN Security Council's unanimous adoption yesterday of UNSCR 2016 on Libya, terminating the protection of civilians and no fly zone provisions of UNSCR 1973, effective October 31, 2011.
"The rapid and successful deployment of the Canadian Forces (CF) in support of Operation UNIFIED PROTECTOR has once again confirmed the leadership role of Canada and the Canadian Forces in today's global security environment," said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence. "The professionalism and dedication of our Canadian Forces personnel demonstrates to the world what our country can achieve when working with our allies. I wish our men and women in uniform a safe return to their families and friends in Canada."
"Canada is proud to have supported the Libyan people in their quest for a brighter future free of tyranny and ruthless one man rule," said Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird. "Canada will continue to support Libya in the post-Gadhafi era as it takes steps toward freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law for all Libyans."
"Throughout this deployment, our personnel demonstrated flexibility and professionalism by successfully conducting integrated air to air operations with our NATO Allies, supporting mid-air refuelling, and patrolling off the shores of Libya," said General Walter Natynczyk, Chief of the Defence Staff. "The successful deployment of CF personnel, and air and naval assets to Operation MOBILE confirmed the leadership role of the Canadian Forces within NATO and gave Canadians one more reason to be proud of their military."
Preparations for the return of CF personnel and assets to Canada are underway.
