President Felipe Calderon Accepted Travel Weekly's Magellan Award for overall destinations in the cultural/arts and beaches categories. The award was presented at the Travel Weekly Mexico Leadership Forum 2011, in recognition of the Mexico Tourism Board's international campaign that includes Mazatlan.

The award was presented on October 18th at the 2011Travel Weekly Leadership Forum. The Forum is an annual event that brings travel industry leaders together. Each year the Forum showcases the role Mexico plays in international tourism.
Travel Weekly's Magellan Awards honors hotels, destinations, airports and travel agencies, among others. This year, Mexico itself was an award winner in recognition for the Mexico Tourism Board's efforts to promote , Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and the 2011 Mexico Travel Summit. "I am deeply committed to tourism," said President Calderon. "I am convinced that we have everything it takes to be in the top 5 tourism destinations in the world." Mexico is currently the 10th most visited country according to the .
The campaign that won the award aims to project the positive things that Mexico represents including people, sights and destinations. Among other initiatives, T.V. spots focus on the unique attributes of each featured destination. "Beyond culture, natural resources, infrastructure and unique experiences, we have something, my friends, that is our greatest competitive advantage: the warmth of the Mexican people," Calderon added.
Mazatlan, one of the featured destinations in the campaign that prompted this award, is known for warm hospitality as well as its rich cultural heritage. "Our city is extremely proud to be a part of this effort to showcase the best of Mexico," said Carlos Berdegue, Vice-President of the Mazatlan Hotel Association and Tourism Trust. "We encourage everyone to visit us and experience unparalleled hospitality, as well as the magic of our colonial city on the beach."
