Canada Pork International Welcomes the Release of the 2010-2011 Agriculture and Agri-Food Market Access Report

ID: 1049674

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 10/25/11 -- Canada Pork International (CPI) is pleased and grateful for all the efforts the Canadian Government has invested in securing market access for Canadian pork during the period covered by this report. The report released by Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Gerry Ritz and International Trade Minister Ed Fast provided a list of issues that were resolved in markets of significant importance to the Canadian pork industry.

Canada Pork International Chairman Edouard Asnong stated that "Resolving technical issues in some key markets has been beneficial to our industry". He also added that "It is positive to see a comprehensive market access plan that focuses on getting results for not only the Canadian pork industry, but to the Canadian agri-food sector as a whole."

The report also makes it clear that gaining access to new markets and maintaining access to existing markets require sustained efforts. In that regard, Canada Pork International will continue to work closely with the Federal Market Access Team as there are still several technical issues that impede our ability to fully penetrate markets worldwide. Based on our past experience, it is very likely that new ones will come up as well, thus the need to continue to work together in a coordinated manner.

In the year to come, it will become critical to Canada Pork International's members that the Governments of Canada and South Korea resume the stalled negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement. Without an FTA that provides a tariff elimination process similar to its major competitors, the Canadian pork industry will soon find itself uncompetitive on this important market and could be excluded entirely in a not so distant future.

Canada Pork International is the export market development agency of the Canadian pork industry. It is a joint initiative of the Canadian Pork Council and of the Canadian Meat Council.
