New Guidelines for Genomic Sequencing Technology Competition Will Help Usher in a New Era of Personalized Medicine and Could Reveal Valuable Clues to Improved Health and Longevity

X PRIZE Foundation and Medco will announce new details of the competition.
The $10 million Archon Genomics X PRIZE presented by Medco is an incentivized prize competition to award the first team who can design and build a rapid and inexpensive technology to accurately sequence a complete human genome -- the 6 billion letters of DNA which are all the genetic material contained in each human cell -- to a level of fidelity never before achieved that could reveal valuable clues to improved health and advanced medical research. Designed to usher in a new era of personalized medicine, the results of this competition could transform the field of genomics and define the first "medical grade" genome.

Rapid, accurate and cost effective genome sequencing is widely regarded as the next great frontier for medical sciences. While some human genomes have been sequenced to date, most have not been done to a high level of fidelity, and current technologies have inherent errors that make the resulting genome unsuitable for true diagnostic and medical treatment potential.
