Almas Jiwani, President of UN Women Canada, Will Deliver Keynote Address at the 2011 International Congress to Eradicate Early and Forced Marriages

(firmenpresse) - LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA -- (Marketwire) -- 10/24/11 -- Almas Jiwani, President of the National Committee for the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women - Canada) will deliver the keynote address at the at the , Los Angeles, California October 26-28, 2011.

A collaborative partnership between , a non-profit organization that addresses social justice and human rights issues through the use of film and other technologies, the , and will bring together several African First Ladies - Chantal Compaore (Burkina-Faso), , Conde Djene Kaba (Guinee), ), policymakers, legislators, NGOs, journalists, academics, and researchers to create a platform for collaborative synergy to develop efficient and effective actions against early and forced marriages. Through these combined efforts, Yellitaare and USC hopes to help the elimination of early and forced marriages in West Africa by 2025.

Moussa Bocoume, President of Yellitaare/African Empowerment, states: It is with great honour and a privilege that we have Ms. Almas Jiwani speaking/present at our conference. Through her global engagements and down to earth presence, Ms. Jiwani has made real advancements for gender equality and the improvement of rights for women and children. She is passionate about strengthening Women's economic capacity as entrepreneurs and producers. She dedicates generous amounts of time and energy to humanitarian issues and has become a renowned advocate of human dignity, tolerance, democracy and human rights.

Ms. Jiwani will deliver the keynote address at the Opening Fundraiser Gala and will Chair the session, "Government Responses to Forced and Early Marriages."

"Early and forced marriages are a gross violation of human rights and constitute a form of violence against women," stated Ms. Jiwani. "Not only are the effects of this practice devastating to the victims, but due to loss of productivity, it is also detrimental to the advancement of society as a whole. Progress needs to be accelerated in addressing the factors of gender inequality and social traditions that perpetuate this issue. I am pleased to join Yellitaare, the African First Ladies, my fellow UN System colleagues and other like-minded humanitarians to give a voice to this pressing matter."





The Congress for the World Campaign is expected to result in the creation of an early and forced marriage Global Initiative, the strengthening of a global movement to eradicate early and forced marriages, an analysis of best practices, and the identification of priorities for future research and action.
