USCBC: China Market Growth Continues, Companies Expand, but Full Access Elusive for Many
"The China Market Is Increasingly Important to US Companies, the US Economy, and American Jobs. At the Same Time, Companies Face Real Challenges When Doing Business in China and Have Significant Concerns About Their Ability to Compete on a Level Playing Field."
(firmenpresse) - WASHINGTON, DC -- (Marketwire) -- 10/24/11 -- Today the US-China Business Council (USCBC), an organization representing roughly 240 world-class US companies selling American goods and services to the China market, released its 2011 China Business Environment Survey Results.
"US companies continue to experience healthy market growth in China. Eighty percent of respondents reported double-digit revenue growth in 2010, and over 40 percent had revenue growth of more than 20 percent," said USCBC President John Frisbie. "The China market is increasingly important to US companies, the US economy, and American jobs. At the same time, companies face real challenges when doing business in China and have significant concerns about their ability to compete on a level playing field."
Among the top issues are licensing barriers, restrictions on foreign ownership in many key industries, and market access barriers for US services sector companies. Inadequate protection of intellectual property rights also remains a top concern, although survey respondents noted some improvements over the past year. "These are all areas that we need to be engaging China on so that American companies can compete on an equal footing," said Frisbie.
In addition, once again, the survey reveals that the exchange rate does not impact US company competitiveness in China, compared to other market access issues. "The exchange rate issue ranked 26th, five slots lower than last year," said Frisbie. "We should focus on the issues that matter and ensure we are coming up with effective solutions to the right problems."
The survey report also touches on other hot button issues, such as the talent shortage in China, rising costs, competing with state-owned enterprises, and "forced" technology transfer.
The top 10 concerns cited by USCBC member companies:
1. Human resources: Talent recruitment and retention
2. Administrative licensing, including difficulties gaining business licenses and product approvals
3. Cost increases, including labor and materials inflation
4. Competition with Chinese companies (state-owned or private)
5. Intellectual property rights enforcement
6. Standards and conformity assessment
7. Restrictions on inbound foreign investment, including ownership limits
8. Transparency
9. Nondiscrimination/national treatment (equal treatment with Chinese enterprises)
10. Market access in services, including financial, legal, information, and telecom
