In challenging economic times, public service cuts announcements are not good news

(firmenpresse) - HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA -- (Marketwire) -- 10/21/11 -- Gary Corbett, President of The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC), today concluded a productive visit to Halifax, Nova Scotia to reinforce the vital importance of a strong relationship between the Institute and its' members in the tough months ahead.

Following confirmation of public service cuts by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, President Corbett said, "This is a critical time for Canada's professional public service and for all Canadians. Unemployment in the Atlantic region is much higher than the Canadian average and a large-scale cut in jobs in the Maritimes will only serve to aggravate the trend."

Of the total of 80 PIPSC members affected by ACOA cuts, 74 are Commerce (CO) staff, representing 30.1% of ACOA's total CO staff and 6 are Computer Systems Administration (CS) staff, representing 15.8% of ACOA's total CS staff. Affected members are from New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island areas and include Account Managers, Economic Development Officers, Network Administrators and Client Support staff in the Community Development and Enterprise Development areas.

"The Community Development program exists to promote local economic growth and help improve local infrastructure while the Enterprise Development program is intended to improve the Atlantic Canadian business climate by helping start-ups, modernization plans and business expansions - reducing the scope will cut vital funds to small communities," reflected a passionate Gary Corbett.

"It is safe to assume that by removing the Development Officer positions from both of the programs that there is substantial reduction on program spending, although we cannot speculate how deep a cut ACOA is planning at this point," said Mr. Corbett.

Corbett's presence in Halifax was to assure affected members that the workforce adjustment process would be carried out in accordance with the terms contained in the collective agreements - PIPSC representatives will meet with both the employer and affected members.

"The public service is not responsible for the government's mismanagement of its finances or the global economic meltdown. PIPSC members are among Canadians who devise measures that allow us to enjoy one of the strongest economies in the world," concluded Mr. Corbett.
