Minister Duncan Announces Advocacy and Public Information Projects
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 10/18/11 -- The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, announced today the 23 projects selected for Advocacy and Public Information Program (APIP) funding for 2011/2012. APIP has been funding organizations since 2007/2008, the first year of the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement.
"Our government is moving forward to support reconciliation among former students of the residential school system, their families and communities," said Minister Duncan. "These important investments are helping to build new partnerships and promote and strengthen healing across Canada."
Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) has committed $4 million for APIP for 2011/2012. Since 2007, approximately $22 million has been invested with a primary focus on sharing information about the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement. The objectives for the 2011/2012 projects include supporting healing and reconciliation, with a particular focus on youth and inter-generational issues, promoting a better understanding of the impacts of the legacy of Indian Residential Schools, and building new partnerships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.
All of the 2011/2012 projects will help promote reconciliation through the development of educational resources and curriculum, cultural arts projects, installation of museum exhibitions, and development of strategies that focus on youth and reconciliation.
The Government of Canada is committed to a fair and lasting resolution to the legacy of Indian Residential Schools and recognizes that bringing closure to the legacy lies at the heart of reconciliation and a renewal of the relationships between Aboriginal people who attended these schools, their families and communities, and all Canadians.
