According to the clinic, pet owners should also not leave pets in the car during colder weather, as heat escapes the car quickly and can become extremely cold very quickly.
"Pets can suffer heat stroke or hypothermia in a matter of minutes in an unattended parked car," said the . "If you see a pet in a locked car without an owner, immediately report the car to a store owner, or call animal control for assistance."
With temperatures in Essex hitting 104 in July, the also reminded pet owners about the warning signs of heatstroke and dehydration. Symptoms of heatstroke and dehydration include heavy panting, glazed eyes, a deep red or purple tongue, a staggering gait, and a rapid pulse. In extreme cases, a dog or cat may even vomit.
