Elongated soft palate is a common breathing disorder that affects Pugs, English and French Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Shih Tzu, Pekingese, Boxer, Mastiff, and Bullmastiff. If the soft palate in the back of the throat is too long or large, it can block the airway, which makes it difficult for the dog to breathe.
Symptoms of elongated soft palate include excessive panting, loud and raspy breathing, coughing up food or phlegm, loud snoring, and passing out from lack of air.
"Short-nosed breeds that have been bred to have relatively short muzzles and noses often experience breathing difficulties due to undersized or flattened breathing passages," said Dr. Frank. "Our new, is an innovative procedure that reduces recovery time and causes less pain. We have been successfully performing this procedure since 2005."
The uses the Ligasure cautery surgical unit. According to Dr. Frank, this provides better vessel sealing in comparison to the traditional laser treatment.
