Thousands Join Lance Armstrong, Cancer Survivors at the Team LIVESTRONG(R) Challenge in Austin

Event Raises More Than $2.3 Million and Attracts 4,300 Participants to Champion Cancer Survivors

(firmenpresse) - AUSTIN, TX -- (Marketwire) -- 10/15/11 -- , cancer survivor, cycling champion and ® founder and chairman, is celebrating 15 years of cancer survivorship by joining 4,300 fellow survivors, advocates and supporters who are participating in the in Austin, Sat., Oct. 15 and Sun., Oct. 16. This two-day event includes a 5k walk/run through the heart of downtown Austin on Sat., Oct. 15 and a multi-distance bike ride, including 20-, 45-, 65- and 90-mile options, through the Texas hill country on Sun., Oct. 16 to raise awareness and funds for people affected by cancer. This year, the Team LIVEChallenge Austin participants have collectively raised more than $2.3 million.

"In October 1996 I joined a club I never wanted to be member of when I was diagnosed with cancer," Armstrong said. "But this disease gave me my mission in life and just this month, I celebrated 15 years of cancer survivorship. This weekend, I am proud to join with thousands of fellow survivors as a member of the LIVE community, which started with this very event right here in Austin. I am in awe that people have traveled from 48 states and 16 countries to attend the LIVE Challenge and we can't thank them enough for their support."

The Team LIVE Challenge Village and street festival on Saturday was hosted by Mellow Johnny's. On Sunday, the public is invited to attend the post-event party, which begins at 8:30am, at Roger Hanks Parkway and Hamilton Cross in Dripping Springs.

People from around the country form teams to train and raise money to support LIVE as part of their preparation for the Challenge. To honor their commitment to the cause and encourage increased fundraising, LIVE designates a number of for each event, such as the Team Champion Award, the Team Time Trial Award, the Individual Champion Award and the Individual Messenger Award.

Will Swetnam, a 20-year cancer survivor and captain of Cyclists Combating Cancer, won the individual fundraising efforts and was honored with the Team LIVE Challenge Austin Team Champion Award and Team Time Trial Award.





"Resources that LIVE provides, such as the LIVE Cancer Navigation Center, offer much needed information for survivors and their families in all stages of the fight," said Swetnam. "Programs like these, and the focus on making cancer a global priority, make it easy to continue to be a part of Team LIVE."

Other winners include Jeff Mulder, Individual Champion Award and Chris Cygul, Individual Messenger Award.

LIVE is the brand of the Lance Armstrong Foundation, created in 1997 by the cancer survivor and champion cyclist to serve people living with cancer and empower communities to take action.
