REPEAT-Media Advisory-OFL President to Toronto Police: "Don't Repeat G20 Abuses; Respect the Rights of Occupy Toronto Protesters"
(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 10/15/11 -- OFL President Sid Ryan called upon Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair, Toronto Police Association President Mike McCormack and police forces in every city where protests occur to respect the democratic rights of protesters and prevent a repeat of the police abuses witnessed in the G20 Summit last year.
"The 'Occupy' actions being launched throughout Canada are an inspiring expression of a grass roots movement that is demanding a fundamental change in our society and our economy. Everywhere, people are frustrated by government collusion with corporations to download the economic crisis onto the backs of working people," said OFL President Sid Ryan. "This is a frustration shared by the labour movement and we are calling on the police to protect the democratic right to express it."
"The OFL is calling on the Toronto Police Service to make a public commitment to protect the civil liberties of protesters and to treat them with the respect they deserve. The shameful police response during the G20 Summit in June 2010 resulted in the greatest abuse of civil liberties since the introduction of the War Measures Act," said Ryan. "The police have an obligation to protect our Charter rights and they owe the public the assurance that last year's police abuse of peaceful protesters won't be repeated, including arbitrary and mass arrests, kettling, tear gas, rubber bullets, beatings and humiliating treatment."
Ryan will attend the "Occupy Toronto" demonstration in Toronto's financial district and he will be available for media interviews.
The Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) represents 54 unions and one million workers in Ontario. OFL President Sid Ryan is the voice of Ontario's labour movement.
