(firmenpresse) - BEVERLY HILLS, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 10/13/11 -- Chartwells School Dining Services, a division of Charlotte, NC-based Compass Group, proudly announced the opening of the Beverly Café at Beverly Hills Unified School District in Beverly High School yesterday with two official ribbon cuttings. The first ribbon cutting, for the students, took place at the beginning of lunch. It marked the successful launch of the lunch program, which began on September 6th.

The second ribbon cutting took place at 4 pm, with the assistance of Gary Woods, Superintendent; Alex Cherniss, Assistant Superintendent and Lisa Korbatov, Board President. Representing Chartwells was Keith Cullinan, President, Chartwells K12; Travis Young, Regional Vice President, Chartwells West Region; Joel Mee, District Manager; Tom Soika, Foodservice Director and Fred Thompson, Chief Administrative Officer of Thompson Hospitality.

The event began during the lunch period earlier that day. A deejay played popular music for the student diners. In the afternoon, Chartwells associates handed out "swag bags," filled with mugs and branded merchandise to attendees.

The stations offer the following: pizza selections in "Bake"; hot food in "Sizzle"; fresh cold cuts and breads in "Deli"; salad bar and wrap-n-go sandwiches in "Greens" station; made-to-order pasta in "Zest" and grilled sandwiches in "Panini." Austin Grill Express, from Chartwells and Thompson Hospitality, rounds out the offerings. Austin Grill is a Tex-Mex restaurant concept adapted for schools that is currently in operation in only three schools in the country: Beverly Hills, Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas and Klamath Falls High School in Oregon. Supported by a staff of culinary experts and chefs with Thompson Hospitality, who are constantly developing new recipes and menu items, Austin Grill offers a variety of meal options such as burritos, tacos, and salads made to order.

Chartwells designed new menus to feature items for the Beverly Café that would resonate with students. The company installed new serving equipment, updated the lighting, put up new signage and refreshed the eating area with paint and the new Beverly Café logo on the walls. Plans are in the works with the district to fully update the seating area and senior lounge. District employees went through four days of culinary training with Chartwells Chef Orlando Luevano; Austin Grill training with Steve Pierce (Thompson Hospitality); and customer service training with district manager Joel Mee.

During the first week of operations, participation in the lunch program increased by 40 percent, and that number continues to rise. In fact, at some BHUSD schools, their meal counts have doubled from last year. The program grew so fast that foodservice workers saw lunch lines grow exponentially. This was solved with the implementation of an entirely cashless lunch program on September 19th, speeding up cafeteria lines significantly. Meal prices run between $4-6 for all students. Parents can view lunch menus, nutritional information and make payments into their child's online lunchbox account by .

"We are excited that this program is off to such a great start," said . "BHUSD is recognized nationally as a leader in education and with this new partnership, Chartwells hopes to elevate BHUSD's status even further in the field of dining and nutrition."
