Its Uniquely Manufactured Spicer Diamond(TM) Series Driveshaft Offers Fleet Owners an Industry-Leading Combination of Weight Savings, Robustness and Maintenance Advantages

(firmenpresse) - MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 10/13/11 -- Based on its recent analysis of the commercial vehicle drivelines market, Frost & Sullivan recognizes Dana Holding Corporation with the 2011 North American Frost & Sullivan Technology Innovation Award for its Spicer Diamond™ Series driveshaft. This innovative driveshaft realizes the weight advantages of aluminum through a unique welding process that can join a tough aluminum tube with steel u-joints. The resulting component is up to 100 pounds lighter than a traditional two-piece steel assembly and offers improvements in noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) characteristics.

"Even a slight reduction in component weight can translate to thousands of dollars of savings in fuel consumption while allowing fleets to increase their payload and consequently their return on investment," says Frost & Sullivan industry analyst Kumar Saha. "Delivering a driveline component that marries lightness with strength, Dana has pioneered a driveline technology that offers significant value to OEM and fleet customers, particularly for weight sensitive applications."

Driveline packaging space has become a key consideration for truck manufacturers as more and more components are added to a vehicle to meet efficiency regulations. The one-piece design of the Diamond Series driveshaft addresses this challenge by bringing down the overall part count from three joint connections to two and by eliminating the center bearing. These modifications can also potentially reduce the cost of installing the product.

Further, the new manufacturing process enables Dana to improve upon the recent enhancements introduced to its Spicer Life (SPL) Series® Universal Joints. These heavy duty SPL u-joints feature a higher power density design that extends products life and improves serviceability in a lightweight and compact package. Now, with the added advantage of the aluminum tube, the resultant product can further help truck OEMs meet the growing torque requirements of engines as well as pass on the weight savings to fleets, increasing ROI for operators.

"As fleet operating budgets get tighter, there is increased pressure on truck OEMs to deliver vehicles that are affordable, resilient, and lighter. Dana's innovative product makes it easier for OEMs to find the weight savings they require to add other necessary components to their trucks," notes Mr. Saha.

The company also offers extensive support to its customers in reviewing their target applications and planned duty cycles before selecting their driveline components. This approach makes it easier for the end user to understand their requirements and maximize the value out of Dana's products.

In short, Dana's unique manufacturing process, as exemplified by the Spicer Diamond Series driveshaft, is highly relevant to the trucking industry that is struggling with impending fuel-efficiency and safety regulations as well as financial stress. By delivering a product that addresses some of the critical concerns of today's trucking industry, and by anticipating the demands of the future, Dana has reinforced its leadership in the driveline and axle industry. In recognition, Frost & Sullivan is proud to present it with the 2011 North American Frost & Sullivan Technology Innovation Award.
