All Eyes on Trucking Industry as Latest Data Points to Recession
The Paragon Report Provides Equity Research on YRC Worldwide and Arkansas Best
(firmenpresse) - NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 10/13/11 -- The trucking industry represents a very important component of the US economy. According to the US Bureau of Economic Analysis, the trucking industry adds about 5 percent to the Gross Domestic product each year. The latest results for the Ceridian-UCLA Pulse of Commerce Index revealed that truckers are purchasing less fuel -- a signal of a slowing economy. The Paragon Report examines investing opportunities in the Trucking Industry and provides equity research on YRC Worldwide, Inc. (NASDAQ: YRCW) and Arkansas Best Corporation (NASDAQ: ABFS). The Ceridian-UCLA Pulse of Commerce Index, which measures the volume of driver purchases at fueling stations nationwide, dropped at an annualized rate of 4.3 percent in the three months through Sept. 30. "Since June, trucking activity has been receding at a pace that would be expected to show up in other economic measures soon," Ed Leamer, the index's chief economist, said in a report. "Two or three more months like this would confirm an official recession."

American Trucking Association (ATA) chief economist Bob Costello is not quite as morbid as Leamer regarding the economy. Costello explains that "freight has been going sideways for much of this year, but it isn't falling significantly either, which suggests the US economy just might skirt another recession."
The not seasonally adjusted truck tonnage index, which represents the change in tonnage actually hauled by fleets before any seasonal adjustment, equaled 123.8 in August, which was 10.9% above the previous month. Compared to August 2010, SA tonnage is 5.2% higher, ATA said, and the tonnage index is 4.5% above a year ago.
