Operation Eyesight Universal: Celebrating Donors on World Sight Day
(firmenpresse) - CALGARY, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 10/12/11 -- , a Canada-based international development organization dedicated to eliminating , will mark (WSD) 2011 tomorrow by paying tribute to its donors - and there are many examples of generosity to celebrate.
One example is the (MCAC), which has funded six wells/water points in Zambia so far this year, thanks to the Chairman's Charity of Choice program.
"We're proud to work with Operation Eyesight to bring clean, protected water to Zambia. We know we're helping prevent the tragedy of blinding trachoma - and we're changing lives forever," says enthusiastic MCAC chair Brad Diggens, who has talked to thousands of contractors at conferences across the country about this charitable venture.
"It's very rewarding to work with Operation Eyesight because their projects provide great impact for a relatively small amount of money. Through their success, they hope to influence and motivate other countries to transform their eye health care systems."
Diggens hopes his organization's example will inspire others to help Operation Eyesight. "Every well we can build stops disease and saves lives. I implore others to donate towards a well and provide less-fortunate people with hope for the future."
Besides its successful projects in Zambia, Operation Eyesight works to prevent blindness in Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda and India.
"Avoidable blindness is a global issue and serious health threat, especially for those living in poverty," says Operation Eyesight's president and CEO, Pat Ferguson. "We know that bringing and restoring sight to people in need builds healthier, more equitable and more prosperous societies."
Ferguson adds that because Canadians recently celebrated Thanksgiving, the organization wanted to mark World Sight Day by voicing appreciation for its thousands of donors around the world. "We value all our donors and their shared support and commitment. They are making lives better in developing countries, where 90 percent of the world's visually impaired people live. Together, we can eliminate avoidable blindness."
(WHO) statistics released this year confirm that 80 percent of visual impairment is due to avoidable causes - problems that could be prevented, treated or cured using known and cost-effective methods. Yet current estimates put the number of people living with significant visual impairment at 284 million, 39 million of whom are blind.
World Sight Day is an annual day of awareness held on the second Thursday of October, to focus global attention on blindness and vision impairment. Included on the official World Health Organization calendar, WSD is coordinated by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) under the VISION 2020 global initiative.
Operation Eyesight is dedicated to the prevention and treatment of avoidable blindness in parts of the developing world. It works with medical professionals and communities in Africa and India to help provide quality eye care programs and sustainable community development. Since 1963, through the support of its donors, millions of the world's poorest people have had their sight restored or protected. To learn more about Operation Eyesight's work, visit .
