USDA MyPlate Partner Chartwells School Dining Services Celebrates National School Lunch Week With Simply Good Fresh and Local Food

ID: 1045268

(firmenpresse) - RYE BROOK, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 10/12/11 -- As a new USDA National Strategic Partner, Chartwells School Dining Services announced plans to leverage its "Fresh and Local" program in support of the National School Lunch Week. The Fresh and Local campaign, which is part of their new Simply Good student nutrition education program, focuses on food grown locally. The Simply Good program is based on the food choices that students make and how they can have a significant impact on their health, environment and community.

The theme of this year's National School Lunch Week is "School Lunch - Let's Grow Healthy." It's geared towards helping students understand where food comes from while highlighting the overall benefit that school lunch helps kids grow strong and healthy. This theme provides the opportunity for children to try something new and promote locally-sourced foods, which ties in perfectly with Chartwells' Simply Good and its mission as a USDA MyPlate partner. Chartwells is the first contract school foodservice company to date to sign on as a partner. The first of the USDA messages, "Make half of your plate fruits and vegetables," which began in September, focuses on the benefits that most Americans would obtain from eating more fruits and vegetables at every meal.

In support of the Simply Good Fresh and Local theme, Chartwells has partnered with many farms all over the nation to offer farm tours in order to promote local produce. Demonstrating their commitment to sustainable agriculture and wellness, Chartwells supports "Buy Local," defined as food grown within a 150 mile radius. Chartwells believes that by supporting local farmers, farms will continue to thrive in local communities, and that future generations of students will have access to nourishing and flavorful fruits and vegetables. Chartwells school dining centers are highlighting local menu offerings, conducting chef's demonstrations, giving local food samples and running student art contests to focus on local foods this harvest season.

In 2011, one of the only industries that grew was the Organics industry, due to the fact that more and more consumers are shopping smarter, eating healthier and enjoying an abundance of fresh, locally-grown produce. "At Chartwells, we support our commitment to sustainability and wellness through the USDA's MyPlate program as well as our Simply Good Fresh & Local campaign," said Karen Dittrich, Director of Marketing for Chartwells. "By doing so, we hope to educate students and customers about sustainability practices, the benefits of eating fresh, local produce and how buying local positively affects us all around."

Chartwells, a division of Charlotte, NC-based Compass Group provides dining services for over 550 public school districts and private schools, comprising over 6,000 separate elementary, middle and high schools nationwide. For more information about Chartwells School Dining Services, visit .
