Edmonton Economic Development Corporation: Homeless Connect Edmonton is Canada's Largest Event
(firmenpresse) - EDMONTON, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 10/12/11 -- , in partnership with , the and are proud to support Homeless Connect Edmonton, which will take place on October 16 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Shaw Conference Centre.
This one-day, one-stop event provides free services to those who are homeless or at-risk-of-becoming-homeless. Homeless Connect serves over 1,400 guests, made possible by the involvement of 400 community volunteers, 65 service providers and 23 sponsors. Guests receive services from organizations such as Pearle Vision, Marvel College, Coinamatic, Alberta Health Services and Mac's Convenience Stores.
With the success and tremendous growth of the last six events, Homeless Connect will be initiating new activities to include a recreation centre for guests and therapy dogs to be part of future events.
"Homeless Connect is an invaluable event for those who are at risk, or are experiencing homelessness," says Susan McGee, executive director, Homeward Trust Edmonton. "Having one place where people can seek help, ask questions and take advantage of free services goes a long way towards ending homelessness in Edmonton."
Services provided to guests include haircuts, dentistry, eye-care, counseling, pre-natal support, Internet access, laundry and a warm meal. Many guests take advantage of discussing employment opportunities and getting housing support information from helpful service providers. Every guest leaves with a care package that contains essential items such as toothpaste, shampoo, soap and deodorant.
"This is our seventh Homeless Connect Edmonton event and we are really excited about the recreation centre that is new to the event this year," says Dave McNaughton, co-chair of Homeless Connect Edmonton. "The recreation centre will keep the guests engaged by offering activities such as board games, sports and much more."
For the last three years, the has welcomed Edmonton's homeless through its doors. The conference centre donates 80,000 square feet of space for each event.
Since the program began, more than 2,400 volunteers have provided services to more than 9,200 homeless and those at-risk-of-becoming-homeless through Homeless Connect Edmonton. It is estimated that roughly 2421people are homeless on any given night in Edmonton

Homeless Connect Edmonton is organized by volunteer committees that provide direction and support for the event. Homeward Trust Edmonton, a not-for-profit organization providing leadership and resources towards ending homelessness, coordinates the overall work plan and ensures the event aligns with related Edmonton initiatives.
