Canada Invests in Nunavut's Cultural Industries
(firmenpresse) - IQALUIT, NUNAVUT -- (Marketwire) -- 10/11/11 -- A multi-year funding investment from the Government of Canada will strengthen Nunavut's arts and crafts and film industries, the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) and Minister of Health announced today.
"Nunavut's rich culture, language, and traditional knowledge make an important contribution to local economies through the arts and crafts sector," said Minister Aglukkaq. "Film production skills training will provide new job opportunities in communities, and help build a more diversified economy."
"Nunavut's arts and crafts have gained worldwide recognition," said the Honourable Peter Taptuna, Nunavut's Minister of Economic Development and Transportation. "Through the strengthening of the Authentic Nunavut Brand for Arts and Crafts, the development of a series of marketing skills videos and radio programs, and the review of Nunavut's carving stone supply systems, this partnership with CanNor will showcase and empower Nunavut's artists so they can succeed both at home and around the world."
"Support from CanNor for our global marketing initiatives and producer tours will foster co-productions with Nunavut-based producers and position Nunavut as a choice film location," said Derek Mazur, CEO of the Nunavut Film Development Corporation. "With this funding, we can expand the film and digital media production talent base that is critical to the on-going growth of the industry."
The CanNor investment will support two multi-year economic growth and capacity development projects in Nunavut. The projects include:
These investments are made possible through CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity building in all three territories.
SINED is one of several economic development programs within CanNor. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada's economic development across the North, and for related policy development, research and advocacy.
