Canada Invests in Nunavut Tourism Initiatives
(firmenpresse) - IQALUIT, NUNAVUT -- (Marketwire) -- 10/11/11 -- The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) and Minister of Health today announced a multi-year investment to develop the Nunavut tourism industry and promote Nunavut as a world-class tourist destination.
"Our Government is proud to support activities that will help Nunavut attract visitors from across Canada and around the world," said Minister Aglukkaq. "These investments will help to strengthen and develop the tourism sector and will help to create sustainable businesses and jobs for Nunavummiut."
"The support Nunavut Tourism is receiving from CanNor will enable us to carry out a variety of projects that will strengthen the tourism industry in the territory. Nunavut Tourism is committed to building a strong, sustainable tourism industry and understanding our members and visitor needs is a big part of that," said Colleen Dupuis, Chief Executive Officer of Nunavut Tourism.
Over four years, Nunavut Tourism will use this investment to support marketing related activities including a major tourism conference, research, visitor exit surveys, website development, and media and trade activities. Additional contributions will come from Nunavut Tourism, the Government of Nunavut, Parks Canada and Inuit organizations.
These investments support the Government's commitments under the Federal Tourism Strategy, (link) by helping to deliver on the Strategy's four priority areas: inspiring the world to explore Canada; making it easier to travel to Canada; encouraging development of extraordinary tourism experiences; and fostering an exceptional tourism workforce.
This investment is made possible through CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) initiative, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity building in all three territories.
SINED is one of several economic development initiatives within CanNor. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada's economic development across the North, and for related policy development, research and advocacy.
