Minister Fantino Highlights Air Procurement Successes During a Visit to 8 Wing CFB Trenton
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 10/11/11 -- The Honourable Julian Fantino, today paid his first official visit to 8 Wing Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Trenton, as Associate Minister of National Defence. During this visit, where he was joined by Mr. Rick Norlock, Member of Parliament for Northumberland Quinte West, Minister Fantino highlighted how the Government of Canada's acquisition of important capabilities such as the CC-177 Globemaster III and the CC-130J Hercules fleets continue to support the missions and operations of the Canadian Forces (CF) based at 8 Wing.
"Our government is fully committed to providing our brave men and women of the Canadian Forces the new tools they need to defend Canada's interests at home and abroad," said Minister Fantino. "The acquisition of these important capabilities demonstrates that our ongoing efforts to strengthen our delivery of new equipment have been successful, but more remains to be done."
Procurement successes at 8 Wing Trenton include the four CC-177 Globemaster III strategic airlifters, which were delivered on-time and under budget; as well as the CC-130J Hercules transport fleet - the first of which was delivered six months ahead of schedule. The thirteenth of the total 17 CC-130J aircraft arrived at Trenton on September 30th, 2011, and the remaining four aircraft are due to be delivered next summer, on budget and ahead of the contractual delivery due date.
"As the heart of Canada's air transport forces, 8 Wing Trenton is at the forefront of Canadian military aviation, with daily flights to the four corners of the globe," said Minister Fantino. "With ongoing improvements to our military procurement processes, we are ensuring CF personnel are equipped to support key operations, such as NATO missions, humanitarian efforts and life-saving search and rescue."
Aircraft fleets located at 8 Wing have played integral roles in supporting key CF missions, including Canada's engagement in Afghanistan and the disaster-relief efforts following Haiti's catastrophic 2010 earthquake. Other missions supported by 8 Wing air assets include Canada's ongoing contribution to the NATO-led military mission in Libya; Operation NANOOK, the largest northern military exercise; Operation JAGUAR, Canada's contribution of military aviation and search-and-rescue capability to support the Jamaica Defence Force; as well as conducting search and rescue for central Canada.
Ongoing investments to maintain and modernize 8 Wing's assets include:
