Canada's Economic Action Plan at work in Ontario

(firmenpresse) - BEAUSOLEIL ISLAND, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 10/07/11 -- On behalf of the Honourable Peter Kent, Canada's Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, the Honourable Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board, Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario and Member of Parliament for Parry Sound-Muskoka, today announced the completion of tourism infrastructure investments in Georgian Bay Islands National Park. These projects were made possible through Canada's Economic Action Plan.

"I am pleased to see funding from Canada's Economic Action Plan play a vital role in the revitalization of infrastructure at Georgian Bay Islands National Park," said Minister Clement. "The recent investment of $2.8 million will ensure that this treasured place continues to engage Canadians while generating important economic benefits for the local community."

The projects completed were identified as priorities in the park management plan and enhance the visitor experience at Georgian Bay Islands National Park. A new "Head of Trails" affords visitors to Cedar Spring Campground easier access to the park's hiking and biking trails. Cabins have been added to Cedar Spring and Christian Beach, which offer visitors unique experiences on both the leeward and windward sides of Beausoleil Island. As well, new washrooms, improvements to water and waste water systems were necessary to meet visitor needs, to ensure the safety of drinking water at Cedar Spring, and to treat waste in a more environmentally friendly manner.

"Our Government is a leader in the protection of Canada's national parks and national historic sites and recognizes just how important these places are to the tourism economy," said Minister Kent. "This investment to improve infrastructure created jobs during construction and enhances the experience for a new generation of visitors to central Ontario."

Tourism represents a significant economic opportunity for Canada and, for this reason, was targeted in Canada's Economic Action Plan. In 2007, the tourism sector contributed approximately $28.6 billion to the Canadian economy and employed 653,400 Canadians. Canada's Economic Action Plan set aside $374 million for improvements of facilities and protection of Canada's national parks and national historic sites. As a result of these investments, many skilled men and women in construction, tourism and conservation sectors were hired in every province and territory of Canada.
