Minister of National Defence Attends the Defence Ministerial in Brussels
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 10/06/11 -- On October 5th and 6th, the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, represented Canada at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Defence Ministerial meetings in Brussels, Belgium. During the meetings, discussions were centred on NATO operations in Afghanistan, Kosovo and particularly Operation Unified Protector where Canada is a leading nation in protecting civilians from the Gaddafi regime.
"This past spring, Canada heard the clarion call and responded swiftly to safeguard the people of Libya in their moment of need," said Minister MacKay. "Great progress has been made in Libya and the work of the Canadian Forces is not yet done. Our navy and air personnel, working alongside our NATO allies and partners, continue to protect and defend the Libyan people as they move towards a more stable future, and transform their country into the free and democratic society to which they have aspired for so long."
Canada is recognized for the service and sacrifices made in Afghanistan and Libya and for making action-oriented decisions in support of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Other topics of discussion included the NATO training mission in Afghanistan and the ongoing reform and transformation of the Alliance.
While participating in the Defence Ministerial meeting, Minister MacKay also took the opportunity to meet separately with a number of his NATO and international counterparts, including Dr. Liam Fox, British Defence Secretary, and Gerard Longuet, French Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs.
The next meeting of NATO Defence Ministers will take place in Brussels in February 2012.
