Dr. Mark Wolpa Receives U.S. Patent for Cold Compression Device Used for Sports Injuries and Surgery

ID: 1042877

(firmenpresse) - SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 10/05/11 -- Dr. Mark Wolpa, founder of the Bay Area Foot & Laser Podiatry Group, received a U.S. Patent for a novel cold compression device that helps to reduce swelling following surgery and injuries. "The application of ice, compression, and elevation following surgery or injury will never go out of style, and my device will assist the patient with this process by applying pneumatic compression along with the application of cold simultaneously and efficiently as opposed to just using an ice bag and elastic wrap," explains Dr. Wolpa.

Dr. Wolpa became interested in finding a better way to provide cold therapy to his patients after observing for years how most patients complain that placing a cold pack on the foot doesn't stay in place and that it is difficult to feel the cold through the bulky bandages placed on the foot following surgery.

"After much experimenting, I came up with a device that wraps around the foot with cold packs inserted into it along with an attached pneumatic compression pump. The pump helps control the swollen extremity as well as drive the cold deeper into the tissues where it is needed," explains Wolpa.

"I have always had an interest in sports medicine, (Wolpa wrote The Sports Medicine Guide by Leisure Press) and wanted my device to be portable so it could also be used for treatment of injuries on the sporting field immediately following an injury," Wolpa says.
