Minister Oliver Reinforces Strategic Canada-U.S. Energy Relationship

ID: 1042501

(firmenpresse) - WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA -- (Marketwire) -- 10/04/11 -- The Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, today delivered a keynote address at the 4th Annual United States Energy Association (USEA) Energy Supply Forum in Washington, D.C. Minister Oliver focused on issues related to energy security, prosperity and jobs, and highlighted Canada's position as the leading, most secure, reliable and competitive energy supplier to the U.S. The Minister promoted this important energy trade relationship between both countries and Canada's commitment to market-based principles that guide our energy policy.

"The future of North America's economy is inextricably tied to energy," said Minister Oliver. "Clearly, it is in the interest of both Canada and the United States to ensure that our future oil supply remains stable, secure and developed in an environmentally responsible way."

Minister Oliver pointed to the proposed Keystone XL pipeline as an important factor in ensuring energy security for the U.S. If approved by the State Department, the pipeline will deliver up to 700,000 barrels of crude oil a day from the oil sands in Alberta to gulf refineries in Texas. It would generate 20,000 construction jobs for Americans.

The Canadian economy also stands to benefit from oil sands development and Keystone XL. In fact, the oil sands product that would be carried over the pipeline is estimated to represent over 140,000 Canadian jobs and $600 billion in economic activity over the next 25 years.

Minister Oliver reaffirmed the Government of Canada's commitment to ensuring the environmentally and socially responsible development of the oil sands, a strategic resource that is critically important to Canadians and Americans alike.

While in Washington, Minister Oliver also met with Congressional and Senate representatives where he underscored the importance of the Canada-U.S. energy relationship, and reinforced how the oil sands and Keystone XL pipeline will contribute to North American energy security, jobs and growth.
