Nobel Prize in Physics for "Fairy Dust"
Zedess Publishing, Publisher of Popular Physics Book "Fizz," Responds to Today's Nobel Prize Announcement
(firmenpresse) - JERUSALEM -- (Marketwire) -- 10/04/11 -- The Nobel committee today awarded the physics prize to three physicists, Saul Perlmutter, Adam Riess, and Brian Schmidt, for their discovery that the universe's expansion is accelerating. This unexpected revelation has been attributed to "dark energy."
In response, popular physics author Zvi Schreiber congratulated the three winners. He also pointed out that this prize is in many ways a celebration of human ignorance. "We used to assume that gravity would break the universe's expansion, and that eventually our universe would collapse in a Big Crunch. Today we celebrate the discovery that the universe's expansion is accelerating, not slowing, so the Big Crunch is cancelled. Instead the universe is scheduled to expand and cool forever, leading to the Big Freeze, which won't be much of a party either."
"But," Zvi added, "no one really knows why the universe's expansion is accelerating. This is generally attributed to the universe being full of 'dark energy.' Dark energy an academic euphemism for 'don't have a clue' and it probably accounts for the majority of mass in our universe. This dark energy that supposedly permeates our universe might as well be called 'fairy dust.' This discovery underlines the fact that most of the stuff in the universe is an invisible mystery."
Fizz is a novel telling the story of the history of physics -- mankind unraveling the universe -- from the perspective of a young woman who time travels to meet Galileo, Newton, Einstein and Hawking. Fizz revives the edu-novel genre made famous by Sophie's World which sold 30 million copies worldwide. Fizz was published in June 2011 on the 100th anniversary of Einstein's seminal discovery that gravity bends light which led to the general theory of relativity and black holes.
Fizz includes a chapter on cosmology including the discovery that the universe's expansion is accelerating.
