Fifteen years ago today LIVE founder and chairman was diagnosed with advanced testicular cancer and pledged to fight and live as a survivor. As the result of his diagnosis, he created the Lance Armstrong Foundation -- now known publicly as ® -- to help fellow survivors.
In a special , Armstrong said, "Too many people around the world are fighting for their lives right this minute without the resources, treatment and support they need. We have to change that. Today, LIVE Day is a challenge; a global day of action where we stand together and declare we won't quit and we won't retreat from the fight against cancer."
This unshakeable promise to fight cancer and live with dignity is the cornerstone of the LIVE movement. To honor that commitment and celebrate survivorship, each year on this day LIVE makes a bold global statement. This year, LIVE is asking people everywhere to on Sun., Oct. 2 and stand in solidarity with cancer survivors around the world.
"Today we celebrate the courage and perseverance of cancer survivors around the world with a simple, yet powerful gesture," said Doug Ulman, LIVE President and CEO. "We wear yellow as a visible reminder of survivorship and our commitment to improving the lives of people affected by cancer."
This pledge comes at a critical moment in the global fight against cancer. In late September, world leaders concluded the historic United Nations High-Level Meeting on Non-communicable Diseases and more than 150,000 LIVE supporters took this fight to the international stage. Those supporters called out cancer as a global crisis and demanded that world leaders take action against the world's leading cause of death.
At LIVE Headquarters in Austin, Texas, the foundation is hosting a with live music, food and kids activities and invites the community to come tour its facility and learn more about the free services offered at the LIVE Cancer Navigation Center, co-located at 2201 East Sixth Street, and online and by phone.
LIVE offers direct services to people affected by cancer -- cancer survivors, their friends and family, health care professionals and caregivers of those diagnosed. These services provide free, confidential, one-on-one support in English and Spanish. Trained, bilingual navigators are available to help individuals address a wide-range of needs including:
-- assistance coping with a cancer diagnosis, help accessing support groups, as well as peer-to-peer connections
-- information on fertility risks and help accessing discounted rates for fertility preservation options
-- information on employment rights and benefits, financial assistance and debt management, including insurance and billing issues as well as medication co-pay assistance
-- general cancer and treatment information, and matching to clinical trials
