Mazatlan Delicacy Earns Place in Guinness World Records
(firmenpresse) - MAZATLAN, MEXICO -- (Marketwire) -- 09/30/11 -- Mazatlan's hoteliers joined forces with the local shrimp industry to promote the region's culinary specialty on September 27th. An effort to create the world's largest shrimp cocktail won a place in the Guinness World Records. The event took place within the framework of - a celebration attended by Mexico's Secretary of Tourism Gloria Guevara as well as President Felipe Calderon.
As a part of ongoing efforts to promote Mazatlan as a culinary destination, Mazatlan Chefs created the world's largest shrimp cocktail as certified by Guinness World Records. The 538.5 kilos of shrimp surpassed the previous record held in Holland. Thousands of spectators shared the cocktail at Mazatlan's .
"This event means more than breaking a world record; it's about positioning Mazatlan as the shrimp capital of the world," said Mexico Secretary of Tourism Gloria Guevara. "Little by little we will communicate all that there is to offer here. There is extraordinary food ... I will confess, I don't think most people have any idea how big the scallops are here... it's impressive," concluded the Secretary.
World Tourism Day Celebrations are the second event in 2011 that focused on the region's culinary attributes. In June, Mazatlan hosted the "" culinary tour that explored the historical significance of typical dishes, as well as the virtues of locally grown food. "As Secretary Guevara noted, Mazatlan has an incredibly rich and varied food tradition. In fact, seafood is only one example of the local delicacies visitors enjoy," said Julio Birrueta, spokesperson for the Mazatlan Tourism Trust. "These events are a great opportunity for Mazatlan's two most important industries, tourism and fisheries, to come together to inform travelers."
The conclusion of Mexico's World Tourism Day celebrations in Mazatlan provided a glimpse of what can be expected for October's Gran Fiesta Amigos. "We look forward to hosting a wonderful group of journalists and travel partners from October 31st to November 3rd for the Gran Fiesta Amigos. We will show our guests Mazatlan's history, culture and cuisine," concluded Julio Birrueta.
