Parks Canada announces completion of infrastructure improvements at site

(firmenpresse) - ST. ANDREWS, MANITOBA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/29/11 -- On behalf of the Honourable Peter Kent, Canada's Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, Mr. James Bezan, Member of Parliament for Selkirk-Interlake, today announced the completion of infrastructure improvements at St. Andrew's Anglican Church National Historic Site.

"On behalf of Minister Kent, I am very pleased to see that the work funded in part by Parks Canada for St. Andrew's Anglican Church National Historic Site has been completed," said Mr. Bezan. "St. Andrew's Anglican Church is important to the local history of the area, so we are proud to invest in much-needed repair for this historic place."

The Gothic-Revival-style church in St. Andrew's, Manitoba is the oldest surviving stone church in Western Canada. Completed in 1849, it quickly became a centre of missionary activity in Rupert's Land. When it ceased to function as a mission in 1886, St. Andrew's evolved to become an active parish, a landmark in the province and was designated a national historic site in 1970.

Through Parks Canada's National Historic Sites Cost-Sharing Program, the Government of Canada contributed $27,070 for urgent conservation work on the bell tower, the wood structure and related components.

"One of our Government's major objectives is to inspire Canadians to develop strong and meaningful connections with Canada's national treasures," said Minister Kent. "Our national historic sites are vital to our history, our identity as Canadians, and our tourism industry. By investing in them and by building lasting relationships with the community groups that operate them, we ensure that they will continue to help support local economies and encourage more Canadians to explore and discover our national heritage."

"This investment is very exciting, and very timely, as the bell tower had become structurally unsound," said Tom Gawne, a member of St. Andrew's Church Parish and the church's bell tower committee. "This funding did much to conserve this important part of our history - and the bell will ring again at St. Andrews Anglican Church."

The Cost-Sharing Program reflects Parks Canada's dedication to protect our people's history and cultural icons through funding towards the conservation of our national historic sites for the enjoyment, education and appreciation of all Canadians, today and in the future.
