SCDL Is a Key Element of Air Force's Joint STARS Airborne Radar and Tracking System

(firmenpresse) - SAN DIEGO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/26/11 -- Cubic Defense Applications (CDA), the defense systems segment of Cubic Corporation (NYSE: CUB), has received an Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (ID/IQ) contract from the U.S. Army for equipment and technical support for its (SCDL).

The five-year follow-on contract, worth up to $49 million, is for spares, repairs, field services and engineering support for SCDL, a key component of the U.S. Army's Common Ground Station. SCDL provides connectivity to the U.S. Air Force's Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System, known as Joint STARS.

Joint STARS, built by Northrop Grumman, is a sophisticated airborne battle management, command and control, intelligence and surveillance system that is carried on E-8C aircraft, modified Boeing 707 passenger airliners. Joint STARS radar and imaging systems can simultaneously track and monitor many ground vehicles, as well as aircraft and ships. Joint STARS aircraft use SCDL to relay data and messages to ground commanders, providing exceptional situational awareness and real-time command and control.

Cubic's SCDL consists of airborne and ground stations that provide a secure all-weather link for Joint STARS' encrypted ground-to-air and air-to-ground communications. "The characteristic of the SCDL we are most proud of is that it is proven to be jam-resistant," said Trey Cochran, Cubic's Program Director for the system.

Cubic delivered the first Joint STARS data link in 1987, and the system has been used extensively since then during conflicts in the Persian Gulf War, Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan. Cubic is currently working with the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force to increase the functionality and make other improvements to it.

Cubic Corporation is the parent company of three major business segments: Defense Systems, Mission Support Services and Transportation Systems.
