ID: 1040416

(firmenpresse) - WASHINGTON, DC -- (Marketwire) -- 09/25/11 -- The Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, concluded a successful trip to Washington DC following her participation in the UN General Assembly in New York. At the World Bank's Development Committee session, she outlined Canada's contribution to relief efforts in East Africa and welcomed the 2012 World Development Report on Gender Equality and Development. "This Report provides clear evidence that women's participation in the economy is smart economics and fundamental to sustained growth," said Minister Oda.

"Women are an agent of dynamic economic growth in developing countries. At a time when so many countries need sustainable economic growth and stability, women are key to contributing to improved livelihoods and poverty reduction."

"I encourage all countries to remain resolute in our efforts to respond to this terrible crisis," said Minister Oda. "I am proud that coming into this week's meetings at the UN and the World Bank, Canada was the third highest single country donor to the on-going global humanitarian response to the crisis. Canada is also leading the way in supporting long-term food security in East Africa through agricultural development and nutrition."

To date, Canada has helped deliver support, especially food aid, to the estimated 13 million people affected by the drought, through its commitment of $72 million to international efforts, and will contribute an amount equivalent to donations made by Canadians between July 6 and September 16 to registered charities responding to the drought.

In Washington, the Minister also attended the first joint G-20 Finance and Development Ministers' meeting. Ministers discussed how to best achieve strong, stable and sustainable economic growth globally. Key discussions focused on food security and the need for infrastructure investment, both significant issues that drive sustainable economic growth in low-income countries. The discussion results will inform the G-20 Leaders for their meeting in Cannes this November. Minister Oda emphasised the importance of development effectiveness and accountability for implementation of Summit commitments.

Minister Oda also met with representatives of Washington-based think-tanks to discuss ways to implement CIDA's sustainable economic growth strategy, including ways to strengthen linkages with the Canadian private sector to help grow businesses in developing countries.
