Cavanagh meets with Truro and District Chamber of Commerce-talking local economy
(firmenpresse) - TRURO, NOVA SCOTIA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/23/11 -- CUPE Nova Scotia President Danny Cavanagh met today with the Truro and District Chamber of Commerce to talk about the role of the public sector in a strong local economy.
Says Cavanagh, "We had a very positive discussion about the sustainability of local economies here in Nova Scotia and the important role that public employees - and their families - play in that."
Cavanagh met with Chamber Executive Director Tim Tucker and President Todlynn MacPherson. He will also be meeting this afternoon with the Regional Development Authority.
"To date we have met with the Sydney and Truro Chambers of Commerce who both received our presentation in a very positive light. In fact both chambers have agreed to have us come back and do a presentation on the '10% Shift', a concept which started by our union in British Columbia which is designed to get consumers to shift 10 percent of their spending to local companies and services," says Cavanagh.
"CUPE alone has 18,000 working women and men along with our thousands of retirees whose wages and pension income go a long way in their respective communities across Nova Scotia. There are some people in this province who seem to have blinkers on when it comes to the critical nature of these public sector jobs and the money they inject into the economy," says Cavanagh.
