Government of Canada Community Collaboration Ensures Lasting Views Overlooking Grand-Pre National Historic Site, Grand-Pre Rural Historic District and Marshes
(firmenpresse) - GRAND PRE, NOVA SCOTIA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/23/11 -- On behalf of the Honourable Peter Kent, Canada's Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, Mr. Greg Kerr, Member of Parliament for West Nova, today announced the purchase of a 1.9 hectare parcel of land overlooking the cultural landscape of Grand Pre.
"The purchase of this piece of land will protect the unique views of Grand-Pre National Historic Site and the marshes beyond," said Minister Kent. "Future generations of Canadians will be able to enjoy and connect with the rich heritage of this area. We are privileged to work with dedicated stakeholders who had a vision and came together to raise the funds to match our government's contribution."
The parcel of land, on Old Post Road, and an adjoining property acquired in 2009, have commanding views of the Grand Pre cultural landscape and provide an unequalled opportunity for its interpretation. This new purchase was made possible by a major fundraising effort involving members of both the local and Acadian communities with the goal of equal community-government funding for the purchase of the land. Donations and pledges made to date exceed $223,000; the Government of Canada's contribution is $232,000 for the land.
"It is truly impressive to see contributions from a variety of local, Acadian and international donors," said Mr. Kerr. "This wonderful support demonstrates the extraordinary attachment people feel towards Grand-Pre National Historic Site and the community of Grand Pre. This government-community collaboration ensures an ideal place to learn about and enjoy the unique Grand Pre cultural landscape."
Parks Canada will continue the planning and development process for the newly acquired site to allow an enhanced opportunity for the interpretation of the Grand Pre cultural landscape. Further discussion with the local and Acadian communities will be carried out as part of this process.
