(firmenpresse) - NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 09/21/11 -- ® leaders and spoke to a packed house at the presented by Mashable, the 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation on Tues., Sept. 20. At their session, "," moderated by Mashable's new editor-in-chief, Lance Ulanoff, they showed two films, , and the world premiere of , a call-to-action video that asks world leaders to act against the global cancer and non-communicable disease crisis.

The session addressed the evolution of the WEAR LIVE wristband campaign that launched with Nike in 2004 to today's world of Tweets, hashtags and the foundation's most recent social media campaign -- -- created in conjunction with this week's United Nations High-Level Meeting on Non-communicable Diseases. Through the wristband, LIVE connected a network of more than 80 million people on every continent in the global fight against cancer, including advocates in low-income countries and in the most remote places -- where cancer has become a leading global health and development challenge.

"The yellow band democratized philanthropy," said Ulman. "It gave people a way to participate in something for $1. Philanthropy used to be something you did when you had time, when you had resources and when you were older. This allowed everyone to get involved at a very grassroots level."

Ulman continued, "It also destigmatized the disease that we fight. It allowed people to outwardly and publicly show their support and virtually tell their story. The transition from this object to social media is enabling people to tell their story in a bigger way. There's nothing that could be more powerful because it encourages people to get screened and talk about this disease that for so long has been hushed. I think when we look back a decade from now, we'll say 'wow, that really changed the conversation. It started the movement.'"

Held during UN week, the Social Good Summit is where big ideas meet new media to create innovative solutions. The Summit unites a dynamic community of global leaders to discuss a big idea: the power of innovative thinking and technology to solve our greatest challenges. It ignites conversations between a live audience in New York City and thousands around the world participating via Livestream. The most innovative technologists, influential minds and passionate activists came together for four days this September with one shared goal: to unlock the potential of new media and technology to make the world a better place.
