The American Medical Association Foundation Awards Community Grants to Improve Prescription Drug Safety
(firmenpresse) - CHICAGO, IL -- (Marketwire) -- 09/20/11 -- The American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation is pleased to announce the 15 organizations that received Prescription Drug Safety Grants through its Healthy Living Grant Program. This initiative addresses critical healthy lifestyle issues by providing mini-grants to grassroots community organizations. The program's prescription drug safety projects are supported by an unrestricted grant from Purdue Pharma L.P.

YOUTHTHINK/Wasco County Commission on Children & Families, The Dalles, OR
Prescription drug abuse is on an alarming rise in the United States. A recent White House study found a 400% jump in prescription drug abuse between 1998 and 2008. Reversing this trend must include providing local organizations with the resources to be able to play an active role in increasing prescription drug safety education and awareness in their communities. AMA Foundation Healthy Living Grant projects range from youth-led social marketing campaigns, to educational forums for healthcare professionals, to age appropriate e-learning modules.
"These Healthy Living Grants provide necessary resources and recognition to those organizations who are on the front lines in their communities, creating change on the local level," said AMA Foundation President Owen Garrick, MD. "We are pleased that Purdue Pharma supports our efforts to prevent prescription drug abuse in communities across the United States."
