Prescription drug abuse is on an alarming rise in the United States. A recent White House study found a 400% jump in prescription drug abuse between 1998 and 2008. Reversing this trend must include providing local organizations with the resources to be able to play an active role in increasing prescription drug safety education and awareness in their communities. AMA Foundation Healthy Living Grant projects range from youth-led social marketing campaigns, to educational forums for healthcare professionals, to age appropriate e-learning modules.
"These Healthy Living Grants provide necessary resources and recognition to those organizations who are on the front lines in their communities, creating change on the local level," said AMA Foundation President Owen Garrick, MD. "We are pleased that Purdue Pharma supports our efforts to prevent prescription drug abuse in communities across the United States."
The AMA Foundation, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt foundation, is committed to improving the health of Americans through philanthropic support of quality programs in public health and medical education. Visit to learn more and to view a list of all the 2011 Healthy Living Grant recipients.
