Annual Reports of the Office of the Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime Tabled and Released
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 09/19/11 -- Today, the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, the Honourable Rob Nicholson, tabled the 2008-09 and 2009-10 annual reports of the Office of the Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime. The Reports provide an overview of the key accomplishments from the Office's second and third year of operations, in which it saw a continued rise in the demands for its services.
"The Office has made tremendous progress in the few short years since it opened its doors and I am proud to share those accomplishments with Canadians," said Sue O'Sullivan, Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime. "Our dedicated staff work everyday to effect positive change for victims - whether it's helping victims one-on-one or talking to the decision and policy makers in this country about what needs to change to make the system work for victims. I look forward to continuing this good work in collaboration with victims, the federal government, and various victim-serving organizations across Canada."
During the period covered by the Reports, the number of Canadians contacting the Office and visiting its website continued to rise. Over the same span of time, the Office made a number of recommendations to the federal government that touched on important issues such as: providing specialized care for victimized children, making offenders accountable for harm done to victims, considering the financial devastation and impact on victims of crime, the establishment of a national DNA missing persons index, the importance of proactive referrals for victims and helping meet the needs of victims of hate crime.
In 2009-10, the Office released its first two special reports: Every Image Every Child: Internet-facilitated Child Sexual Abuse in Canada and Towards a Greater Respect for Victims in the Corrections and Conditional Release Act. The Reports made recommendations to the federal government on how to address the issue of Internet-facilitated child sexual abuse and respecting and enhancing victims' role in the current corrections and parole system respectively. The Office was pleased to see a number of these recommendations reflected in proposed federal legislation and will continue to push for the adoption of the remaining recommendations.
