Statement by the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, on the 10th Anniversary of the September 11th Terrorist Attack
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 09/11/11 -- The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, issued the following statement today in regard to the 10th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attack:
"On September 11th, 2001, terrorist acts in New York, Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon claimed thousands of lives, including those of 24 Canadians. On this solemn occasion, the memory of the victims of terrorism and the pain of their families strengthen our resolve at home and abroad to defend the principles that bind us: freedom, democracy, the rule of law and human rights.
"In the aftermath of that fateful day, the resilience and generosity of Canadians demonstrated our readiness to open our hearts and homes to our friends and allies. We continue to take inspiration from those examples of strength and support in the face of tragedy.
"While terrorism continues to pose a threat to peace and security, the profound impact these events had on Canadians in the last decade has shown that terrorism will not undermine our way of life. Our Government is taking decisive action to address the evolving threat of terrorism.
"We commend the sacrifices made by those who risk their lives to protect others from harm. To those who served in Afghanistan and other troubled regions in recent years, you have earned the thanks of a grateful nation. Your commitment, service and sacrifice mirror that of those Canadians who travelled overseas generations ago to fight for freedom on our behalf.
"Canada will continue to work with our international partners to enhance the security of Canadians while at the same time promoting our shared values globally in our determination to build a better future."
