CPC and CPI Support Cairns Group Farm Leaders' Call to Conclude Doha Negotiations

ID: 1037671

(firmenpresse) - SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN -- (Marketwire) -- 09/09/11 -- The Canadian Pork Council and Canada Pork International are in full support of the call in the Cairns Group Farm Leaders' communique for governments "to re-focus their efforts in bringing the Doha Development Round to a successful conclusion". The CPC and CPI were participants at the meeting held earlier this week in Saskatoon, in conjunction with the meeting of Cairns Group Ministers.

"The completion of the Doha Round of multilateral trade negotiations under the World Trade Organization is extremely important for the Canadian pork industry" said Jurgen Preugschas, CPC Chair. "We depend upon exports for roughly two-thirds of our production."

"The WTO is the only mechanism available to us to comprehensively address all areas of government policy that affect trade - not only tariffs, but also domestic support and export assistance", added Edouard Asnong, Chairman of CPI.

The two organizations also agree with comments made by Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Gerry Ritz in support of the use of sound science in trade rules. Minister Ritz co-chaired what was the 36th Cairns Group Ministerial Meeting.

Messrs. Asnong and Preugschas also made reference the weak economic performance currently being experienced in many countries of the world and cited the importance of trade liberalization in the past as a catalyst for economic growth.

The CPC serves as the national voice for hog producers in Canada. A federation of nine provincial pork industry associations, our organization's purpose is to play a leadership role in achieving and maintaining a dynamic and prosperous Canadian pork sector.
