German Bundesrat President Launches New Net-Zero Energy German International School Toronto

Canadian-German business community steps up to support school's growth, unique international learning perspective

(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 09/08/11 -- The President of the Bundesrat of the Federal Republic of Germany and Minister-President of the State of North-Rhine-Westphalia, Mrs. Hannelore Kraft, planted a sturdy German oak tree at the new North York site of the growing German International School Toronto yesterday ().

The school is part of a network of 140 that are sponsored by Germany's Central Agency for Schools Abroad on behalf of the German Federal Foreign Office.

To accommodate the Toronto school's growth and pursuit of academic excellence with an international learning perspective, the (GIST) board acquired a decommissioned church at to serve as its new home in time for the 2012 academic year.

Minister-President Kraft underlined in her speech that the new net-zero energy school will be a center for the German speaking community and become a wonderful part of Toronto's multicultural mosaic. She particularly thanked Canadian-German business leaders gathered at the school's new site for their generous and active support of this project.

Turning to the GIST students she said they were all young ambassadors for Germany and for the bilateral relationship between Germany and Canada.

Students of German Schools Abroad receive a first-class education and obtain German as well as local qualifications. The German language, culture, education and encounters and exchanges form the cornerstones of German Schools Abroad. The Toronto school targets growing its current K-8 offering to a full K-12 program with an internationally recognized diploma within 10 years.

"In addition to a new, larger, energy-efficient building that allows us to grow, the school will continue to occupy a unique position in the Toronto independent school landscape by providing a curriculum that is conducted in German, with strong English and French-language elements, is integrated with the German and Ontario school systems, and provides students with a unique international perspective and gateway" said Dr. Christian F. von Twickel, GIST Board President & Chair, and Executive Vice President of .





Dr. von Twickel has been joined by other members of the Canadian-German business community in the new school initiative.

"With the help of our colleagues in the Canadian-German business community, the building is being enlarged and will incorporate state-of-the-art, energy-efficient materials and renewable-energy technologies with the potential to generate at least as much energy as it consumes, making the school a "net zero" energy consumer with a significantly reduced carbon footprint," said Michael Langstaff, Vice President, . Bosch and its New Brunswick-based partner, , are providing and installing the school's renewable energy technology system.

Other members of the Canadian-German business community announced two significant cash donations at the event to help fund the school's construction. Susan Dimpflmeier, President of , presented Dr. von Twickel with a cheque for $500,000, and Jan Heck, President of , presented a cheque for $40,000 on behalf of the German-Canadian Business and Professional Association.

The school will be an important focal point for the Canadian-German community in and around Toronto and will be open in time for the new 2012 academic year.

About the German International School Toronto

From its current Cranbrooke Avenue location, the school educates 60 students from Kindergarten through Grade 8 taught by full and part-time teachers from Canada and Germany. With its new, larger home on Erie Street in North York, school will be able to meet demand for more students by adding Grades 9 and 10 in the 2013 academic year, and Grades 11 and 12 three-to-four years later. This will provide students with the opportunity to earn an internationally recognized diploma, enabling graduates to enter colleges and universities all over the world. Visit .
