New Video-Based Lesson Plans on Global Environmental, Health, and Political Issues Available Free to Educators via Curriki
(firmenpresse) - CUPERTINO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 08/31/11 -- As a result of its Video Lesson Plan Challenge (), Curriki, the leading K-12 global community for creating, sharing, and finding open learning resources, today recognized five educators with cash awards for their work in developing a student-oriented K-12 lesson plan, where video is a key medium used to teach students a particular subject. These new online lesson plans are featured on and can be used or adapted by teachers around the world to enhance their existing curriculum, saving teachers valuable time and adding rich, interactive video elements.
This year's top entry is What is a PSA, Issues in Africa (), contributed by Sara Thompson, a North-Central Florida Language Arts & Social Studies teacher. This grade 6-8 lesson plan helps students learn about issues taking place in Africa in an engaging way, with students creating their own Public Service Announcement based on a current issue such as AIDS, hunger or genocide.
"I wanted to infuse media literacy with my unit on African geography and decided to look at current events and mesh that with PSAs," said Sara Thompson. "Students not only learn how PSAs are used, but they create something positive that brings awareness to a real-life issue in Africa today."
"Today's generation of students is immersed in digital technologies and we need to adapt to different learning styles," said Curriki Chairman and CEO Kim Jones. "The integration of technology allows teachers to use rich, visual media such as video to enhance student learning, which can make a big difference to children who do not learn in the traditional manner."
This year's recipients contributed valuable content to curriki.org; each unit includes a summary, essential questions, learner outcomes, standards alignment and more. The recipients for 2011 can be found at and feature:
