Statement from Veterans Affairs Minister Steven Blaney on the Korean War Veterans' Last Hurrah
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 08/30/11 -- The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today issued the following statement on the occasion of the Korea Veterans Association of Canada's Last Hurrah convention in Winnipeg.
"When the United Nations came to Korea's aid with a multinational force, Canada responded in numbers exceeding the world's expectations. As you gather in Winnipeg for possibly the last time, our Government renews its pledge to honour you, our heroes. We will ensure that the Torch of Remembrance will never be extinguished.
"The camaraderie you share today began on battlefields half a world away. But a relationship born of hardship need not be defined by it. I hope you will take time to reflect on all the great achievements you have made and look ahead to the bright future made possible by your sacrifices.
"The Korean War was one of Canada's most significant military engagements of the 20th century. From 1950 to 1953, more than 26,000 Canadians served in Korea, working to restore peace and stability to the area. 516 Canadians made the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of peace, freedom and justice for the people of South Korea. Over 7,000 Canadians served in Korea from the armistice until 1957.
"The men and women serving today follow in your footsteps, striving to uphold the values for which Canadians fought during the Korean War. Your sacrifices and your achievements will never be forgotten. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I want to express my gratitude for your service to Canada and wish you a successful event as you celebrate The Last Hurrah."
The Last Hurrah is the final planned gathering of the Korea Veterans Association of Canada. Veterans of the Korean War from around the world are meeting in Winnipeg along with their families and dignitaries from Canada, the United States and the Republic of Korea. On behalf of Minister Blaney, Senator Yonah Martin will attend a banquet tonight and address the approximately 600 convention attendees.
