Minister Kenney Issues Statement Recognizing Eid al-Fitr
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 08/30/11 -- The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, issued the following statement recognizing Eid al-Fitr:
"For Muslims in Canada and around the world, Eid al-Fitr is a significant day based on the sighting of the new moon that signals the end of Ramadan - the Islamic holy month of fasting - and the start of a three-day feast.
"Known as the Festival of the Breaking of the Fast, Eid al-Fitr is a time marked by special congregational prayers, charity and gift-giving. It is also time of great joy and celebration during which Muslims visit family and friends and gather for festive meals.
"For all Canadians, this important Islamic holiday provides an excellent opportunity to reflect on the tremendous contributions that Canada's diverse Muslim communities have made to this country's rich heritage.
"As Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, I extend my best wishes for a happy and healthy celebration of Eid al-Fitr to all Muslims.
