(firmenpresse) - BRANDON, MANITOBA -- (Marketwire) -- 08/23/11 -- Canada's largest union is donating $20,000 in support of Manitobans affected by this summer's devastating floods. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) made the donation today to the Canadian Red Cross to help with on-going relief efforts in southern Manitoba.

"Over 600,000 CUPE members across the country are standing in solidarity with the people of Manitoba as they recover from the destruction caused by these floods," said Paul Moist, national president of CUPE. "I hope this donation can be of some help to those whose lives have been disrupted and a little comfort as they rebuild their community."

Several CUPE members in around the Brandon area lost homes to flooding this summer, and many others suffered severe property damage.

"CUPE members are proud of their communities, and they have suffered like so many of their family, friends and neighbours," said Claude Genereux, national secretary-treasurer of CUPE. "All CUPE members from coast-to-coast-to-coast will do what they can to help Manitoba communities recover."

CUPE Manitoba division President Kelly Moist joined members from CUPE 69 and other CUPE Manitoba locals to make the donation to the Canadian Red Cross today in Brandon.

"Rebuilding from these disasters could take years, but CUPE Manitoba members will be there all the way to help," said Kelly Moist.

The Canadian Red Cross assisted over 4,500 Manitobans forced to evacuate their homes due to flooding, and continues to offer support to families trying to recover. CUPE's donation will go towards Red Cross relief efforts in over 40 Manitoba communities.

"The Red Cross wishes to thank CUPE for their support in helping flood-affected Manitobans get back on their feet through this generous contribution," said Jane Hunt, Canadian Red Cross Provincial Director. "This donation will help provide Manitobans with the resources they need to start rebuilding their lives."

Canadians wishing to support the Canadian Red Cross Manitoba Floods Response efforts are encouraged to contribute by calling 1-800-418-1111, donating through , or contacting their local Red Cross office.
