(firmenpresse) - MAZATLAN, MEXICO -- (Marketwire) -- 08/22/11 -- Mexico's Secretary of Tourism designated as host of Mexico's 2011 World Tourism Day Celebrations. World Tourism Day is celebrated annually around the world on September 27th. The official theme this year is "Tourism -Linking Cultures". The Secretary declared the event would be without precedent, as will designate celebrities, artists and athletes as Ambassadors for Mexico's colonial city on the beach.

Secretary Guevara made the announcement during a joint press conference with Mario Lopez Valdez, Governor of the State of Sinaloa and Oralia Rice, Sinaloa's Secretary of Tourism last Wednesday. "Mazatlan is one of the most attractive destinations in our country. The city hosts large events such as Carnaval, it boasts great infrastructure for conventions, and is easily accessible by land and air," she said. "That is why it is one of the destinations with greatest potential."

According to the , the purpose of World Tourism Day is "to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value. The event seeks to address global challenges outlined in the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and to highlight the contribution the tourism sector can make in reaching these goals." In fact, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon recently released an official statement of support for the celebration, acknowledging "tourism's ability to generate socio-economic opportunities ... is more important than ever."

Mazatlan's profile has increased in the past several years due to investment in the new "Playa Espiritu" tourism corridor, as well as the restoration of Mazatlan's historic and cultural center of town. Playa Espiritu will run from Mazatlan to the nearby eco-tourism destination of "Teacapan", broadening the scope of experiences offered by the region. Mexico will use World Tourism Day celebrations as a platform to encourage investment in the area. Yet it is the rich cultural legacies that particularly set the destination apart from other beach resorts. Therefore, hosting this year's "Linking Cultures" theme is fitting for a city that actively reconciles international tourism with deep-rooted culture.
