Parliamentary Secretary Robert Goguen Pays Tribute to Veterans at Ceremony in Dieppe
(firmenpresse) - DIEPPE, NEW BRUNSWICK -- (Marketwire) -- 08/21/11 -- Robert Goguen, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and Member of Parliament for Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe, on behalf of the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today joined Veterans, Canadian Forces members, community leaders and members of the public for the Dieppe Raid ceremony held at the Dieppe Cenotaph in New Brunswick. The event honoured the contributions of Canadian Veterans during the Dieppe Raid in Normandy, France, on August 19, 1942.
"I encourage you to take a moment today to remember the heroes of the Dieppe Raid, those who returned to Canada and those who never made it home," said Minister Blaney. "Their task was a difficult and costly one, but their efforts and selfless sacrifices were not in vain. Today, 69 years later, we still honour them and proudly remember their achievements."
Of the nearly 5,000 Canadians who participated in the Dieppe Raid, code-named "Operation Jubilee," only approximately 2,200 returned to England and many of them were wounded. Tragically, 913 Canadians died during the raid. The Canadians who participated in the Dieppe Raid were among the more than one million men and women from Canada who served during the Second World War. The efforts of all of these Canadians helped ensure that victory was achieved.
"We must never forget the sacrifices and achievements of all those who gave so much to restore peace and freedom to the world," said Member of Parliament Goguen. "The legacy and memory of these brave Canadians will forever be engraved in our hearts and in stone, as evidenced by the incredible monument that stands before us, in a city named after this historic battle."
